What are the latest innovations in forums?

I see forums as moving toward integration within the entire site, rather than just existing in one spot. Woven on other web pages, internal to the domain as well as external sites, forum content is being leveraged as part of a complete social strategy.  

I also see more gamification and badges coming down the pike, building on existing point systems and user levels.
